Fikadu was born on Dec 18, 1986 Shoa, Ethiopia. In high school, he developed his running ability and form. His goal then was to become famous through running and earn a position on the Ethiopian National Team. He worked hard racing and training on his own. In Sep 2005, he took part in the Ethiopian International ½ Marathon Championships. There, he won 3rd. Winning 3rd place at the Championships opened the door for his running career. He immediately hired a manager and started traveling to races inside and outside of Ethiopia. In April 2006, the race director for the Potomac 1/2 Marathon invited him to participate in his race on 7 May 2006. He earned second place behind teammate, Tamrat Ayalew. Shortly after the 1/2 marathon, he joined the Foot Solutions Elite Team.
